New York Fashion Week: Long Live The Dandy
I’m one of those girls who’s always wanted to dress like a *dandy. Since the age of four, I’d been traipsing around my father’s walk in closet, putting on boxy jackets, and throwing on silk dress ties. My dad is one of those men who (thank god) I have never seen lounging around the house in sweat pants and a t-shirt…even jeans is a rarity. Blazers, ties, crisp white shirts, polished loafers, and gold cufflinks, along with his leather briefcases and notebooks are simply de-rigeur. When I was young, I had to beg my parents to buy me a blazer, which ended up getting bought from the boy’s section (this was back in the early 2000’s when fashion was in strange times and wearing blazers was so not a girl’s thing). That aside, I wore that blazer till the ends began to fray. It was probably the beginning of what I would call my personal style evolution.
Enter, some of the most fantastic collections from New York Fashion week, which is still currently raging on. You have Ralph Lauren’s fall/winter collection, which features top hats, bowler hats, walking sticks, brogues, pin-striped harem pants and lots and lots of blazers.
And there’s Donna Karan’s fall/winter collection, which has taken masculine and made it very very sexy. There are crisp white shirts with plunging necklines, patent leather loafers, and some sort of cross between a fedora and a top hat, that I’m absolutely in love with.
So moral of the story: Menswear is always in style, and can look equally chic on women. So dive into your dad/(perhaps you have an impeccably dressed boyfriend or brother?)’s closet, stealborrow something you like, and make it your own.
*Dandy: A man unduly devoted to style, neatness, and fashion in dress and appearance. Typically from an older period in time.
